KEYLOGGERS - AN INVISIBLE DANGER

The threat of keyloggers is a rapidly growing danger in the world of IT security. As much as 15% of all PCs tested for spyware by an antispyware company were found to have keyloggers installed. Keylogging are used by criminals either for identity theft or other kinds of illegal activities.
Keyloggers are designed to record the user's keystrokes and can be either hardware or software. A hardware keylogger is a dongle that connects between the keyboard port on the rear of the PC and the keyboard cable. This is hard for the user to detect because the average user hardly looks at the back of his computer.

Even worse is the software keylogger. This is also the most common form for installation of keyloggeres. President of International System Security Association UK, Richard Starnes, describes it as “a nasty piece of work that gives criminals the keys to kingdom". Software keyloggers are usually installed by adware, trojans and viruses. Keylogging allows criminals to look for particular bits of information that can be used for identity theft, intellectual property theft, and other kind of frauds. - Keyloggers can also be installed through web sites and through email attachments. Some web sites will install keyloggers automatically on your computer when you visit them, but these are normally short-lived websites, says senior virus analyst Snorre Fagerland at Norman.

One of the most horrifying features of keyloggers is that they can reside silent or dormant on computers for ages with no one realising that they are there. Practice leader Fran Howorth at Bloor Research encourage companies to put stronger emphasis on computer security in order to avoid the problem of keyloggers and other computer threats. - Companies should place greater emphasis on raising awareness on security matters, says Howorth to Update magazine. The national Hi-Tech Crime Unit strongly recommends organisations that suspect keylogging activity to report this to the local police department.

The best way to stay protected and to avoid the problem of keyloggers is to install efficient antivirus protection. - Antivirus protection such as Norman Virus Control, and Norman Personal Firewall are efficient tools for protection. But you should also use normal common sense, meaning that you should not open unknown email attachments and keep your antivirus protection updated at all times, says Fagerland.

An antivirus solution will help you avoid viruses and worms that install keyloggers and a personal firewall will prevent information from leaving the computer.
